Week of Nov. 5

This week we have been working with irregular plural nouns and singular possessive nouns during our D.O.L. time. In Reading, we finished the story 'Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World.' On Friday, we all got to make real biscuits from scratch along with bacon and stewed raisins!

In Math, we started Chapter 4 this week. It is about multiplication and division. We have started taking timed tests for our multiplication facts, starting with the 0's, 1's, 2's and 5's. In Science we took a test covering cells, tissues, body systems, classifying organisms, etc. We also had a test in Social Studies this week covering Chapter 1: Geography.

We had 2 assemblies this week: An Accelerated Reader assembly on Thursday, and a Veteran's Assembly on Friday.

Week of Oct. 29

This week we have been learning about singular and plural nouns during our D.O.L. time. We also took a D.O.L. quiz. In Reading, we have continued reading the chapter book, 'Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World.' We should be finishing the book next week.

In Math, we took our Chapter 3 test and will begin Chapter 4 next week which is about multiplication and division. We played Sudoku on Thursday and had some new multiplication games for our math stations on Friday.

We finished Chapter 1 in Social Studies (landforms, environment, weather, natural resources, manufactured goods, etc.). We will be taking the Chapter 1 test next week.

In Science we have continued learning about how scientists classify things. We got to go down to the nature trail and collect leaves from many different kinds of trees. When we got back to our room, we classified them based on their characteristics.

On Halloween, our 2nd grade friends from Mrs. Hinrichs class came to visit. We had a lot of treats, read Halloween stories, and did a Halloween picture find with the 2nd graders. Later in the day, we sang Halloween carols with Mr. Anderson's class!

Week of Oct. 22

This week we started reading a new chapter book for Reading. The story is called 'Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World.' It is about a young black boy who lives with his mother and two older sisters. He is looking forward to going with his grandpa to stay on a ranch.
In Math, we have been working on adding and subtracting with large numbers, subtracting with number that have zero in them, and using regrouping. We also learned a couple of mental math strategies called compensation and breaking apart.
In Science we read about the Muscular System and the Circulatory System. We got to color, cut-out and glue on muscles, a heart and lungs to our human body cut outs. In Social Studies we have been learning about different landforms and water forms and made a poster showing them.
In Art, we have continued to work on our goober masks and in Phy Ed we have been playing games from foreign countries.
We finished our final drafts of our 'Turnabout' stories and have begun reading a new read aloud book called 'Where the Red Fern Grows' about a young boy and his coon hunting dogs.

Week of Oct. 15

This week we read a story called 'Open Wide, Don't Bite!' that was about a dentist. This dentist worked on large, dangerous animals. After reading the story, we took our Unit 1 Reading test. In math, we have been working on rounding numbers to specific place values and then estimating the sums and differences. We have also been working with the properties of addition and rules of subtraction.
In science we have been learning about how scientists classify organisms based on their characteristics and the different Kingdoms that organisms are classified into. In social studies we have been learning about geography, the study of the Earth and how people use it.
We have been making masks using goober, paint and cardboard. In music we have been discussing themes for the Christmas concert, and in Phy Ed we have been playing scooter hockey and different tag games.
We also finished our read aloud book called 'Turnabout'. We never found out what happens to the girls when they reached zero years old. We began writing our own "final chapters" to the story where we tell how we think it should end.

Week of Oct. 8th

We will be keeping our same Star of the Week and Room Captain for next week since we have back-to-back short weeks. We FINALLY got our tarantula in our room and we will be voting on pet names when the kids come back on Monday. We read 'Open Wide, Don't Bite' which is the last story from our first reading unit. Overall, the kids did a great job on their unit 1 Reading test. In our Book Clubs, the club reading 'Chocolate Fever' finished their book and has begun reading 'Charlotte's Web'. It looks like there are several other groups getting close to finishing their fist chapter book as well (Holes, Maniac Magee, Holes, Fudge-A-Mania). Also with reading, our class had a GREAT turnout for the annual Read-and-Feed! I enjoyed meeting those of you who came and once again, thank you very much for the books that were donated to our classroom- I greatly appreciate it :) In math, we began our third chapter which involves strategies for doing math mentally, and learning about the different properties and rules for addition and subtraction. I can tell the kids are eager to move on to new things in math! In Science we learned about the different characteristics that scientists look at when classifying organisms and in Social Studies we continued coloring our school maps that were started last week. Our current read aloud book, 'Turnabout' is almost finished and we will be doing a related writing project when we finish next week.

As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me any time! I look forward to seeing all of you again next week for conferences :)

Week of Oct. 1st

We had a busy week with testing! We took our first Social Studies test which had to do with map and globe skills. The test was "open book" but was still hard. In math, we took our Chapter 2 test. There were questions on it about rounding, adding money, making change and using a bar graph. The making change part was probably the hardest. We also took our spelling test, read in our book clubs and read a story called 'Seal Journey' in our Reading books. In Science, we finished adding the leg bones to our human body cut outs. We made some really cool drawings in Art, and will be starting scooter hockey in Phy Ed. next week! Mary Born has been working with us doing Accelerated Math and Reading, and Mrs. Eggert has been working with some of us on Read Naturally.

In social studies, we have been learning how to use latitude and longitude lines on maps and globes. We took our NWEA tests for Reading and Math this week. We also had a really cool assembly called, 'Focus on Your Target' where a funny guy in a wheel chair showed us how he won an Olympic medal shooting a bow and arrow.
